  • Beginning of Social and Climate Activism: What Influenced Isra Hirsi?

    Let us first know about Isra’s family background and her early life. Born on February 22, 2003, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, U.S., Isra Hirsi’s mother is Ilhan Omar, a politician and the first woman of color to represent Minnesota in the U.S. Congress. Moreover, Ilhan has been serving as the U.S representative for Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District since 2019.

  • Isra Hirsi’s father, Ahmed Abdisalan Hirsi, married Ilhan in a faith-based Islamic marriage in the early 2000s. The former couple separated in 2019 after citing irreconcilable differences as a reason for their divorce. Further, Isra has two younger siblings; Adnan Hirsi and Ilwad Hirsi.

    Raised by a mother who survived a war in Somalia and whose ancestry belonged to the military and educators, Isra grew up with a strong sense of community and social responsibility.   • While growing up, Hirsi’s family moved around between Washington and Minnesota, which led her to change to four separate elementary schools.     Rise of U.S. Youth Climate Strike: Youth’s Fight For the Environment

    In May 2019, Isra, then 16-year-old, along with two youth leaders, Alexandria Villasenor (13) and Haven Coleman (12), planned the U.S. International Youth Climate Strike, where students walked out of class in order to call for urgent climate action. Isra led the organization of hundreds of strikes across America on March 15 and May 3, 2019.

    The U.S Youth Strike was a joint effort between students and a number of organizations throughout the United States, marking one of the largest climate strikes in the history of the nation. The organization was part of a global movement inspired by Greta Thunberg‘s Fridays for Future, where young people worldwide walked out of schools to demand urgent action on climate change.

    The majority of people are familiar with Thunberg and the global youth climate movement she inspired, but outside the media limelight, there are countless people working tirelessly for environmental justice, just like Isra Hirsi. Her organization helped launch over 1000 strikes across the United States, while similar events were held across the world.

    As a leader within the movement, Isra fearlessly took to the streets, rallying her peers and demanding that political leaders prioritize environmental protection and sustainability. Her powerful speeches and unwavering commitment to the cause made her a prominent figure not only in the United States but also on the international stage. The U.S. Youth Climate Strike quickly gained momentum, drawing attention to the need for comprehensive climate policy and sustainable practices.

    Recognition for Youth Empowerment Efforts: Does Isra Hirsi Have Time For Her Personal Life?

    A rising star in her own right, Hirsi has received some prestigious awards for undertaking notable climate activism at such a young age. In 2019, Hirsi received the Brower Youth Award, an award dedicated to young social and environmental activists under the age of 23. The same year, she was awarded the Voice of the Future Award at Power Women Summit held at the Fairmont Miramar Hotel in Santa Monica.

    As a woman of color and a racial justice advocate, Hirsi was included in Fortune’s list of the 40 Under 40 in Government and Politics. Likewise, she was also recognized by BET in their 2020 Future 40 List.
