5. Difficult Beginnings
Nunez, a California native, had the opportunity to grow up in a bustling household under his father’s care with the support of his grandmother in Los Angeles. However, when Nunez was ten, circumstances led him and his family to relocate to Mountain Home, Idaho, after his father started seeing someone new.
While initially resistant to this change of scenery, Nunez now recognizes that it shielded him from potential troubles he might have encountered back in the city. Nevertheless, adapting to rural life presented its own set of challenges for young Nunez.
Tensions within his household gave rise to conflict between himself and his father’s partner, leading to a tumultuous atmosphere. Reflecting on the past, Nunez somberly recalls physical and verbal mistreatment from his stepmother, who harbored resentment towards his father, who had three sons.
Additionally, navigating social dynamics at school proved challenging for young Johnny due to the hardened demeanor he developed while growing up in urban Los Angeles, often resulting in disagreements and clashes with peers.
4. From Wrestling To MMA
Upon relocating to Idaho, Nunez embarked on his wrestling journey, showing little potential. However, everything shifted when he witnessed the triumphant victory of his teammate in the state tournament. Filled with determination, Nunez dedicated himself to offseason training and emerged victorious as he claimed the state championship a year later.
Over time, Nunez’s accolades grew significantly. He achieved two consecutive Idaho state championships and secured a coveted Junior FILA All-American position. His prowess led him to wrestle for Boise State University in NCAA Division I competition. With an impressive record of over 2000 matches in wrestling alone, Nunez also forged connections with influential figures from the world of mixed martial arts through his active involvement in the sport.

3. Suffering Losses Outside The Ring
Upon completing his education, Nunez accompanied his college wrestling coach to the Tapout Training Center in Las Vegas. While there, he faced numerous challenges, undertaking various jobs and finding temporary accommodations on a gym couch as he dedicated himself to preparing for a career in professional sports.
Additionally, Nunez allied with renowned mixed martial arts mentor Shawn Tompkins, who played a crucial role in guiding him through his first amateur competitions. Regrettably, tragedy struck when Tompkins unexpectedly died from a heart attack at only 37 years old in 2011. This sudden loss deeply affected Nunez and made him question his path.
In another unfortunate turn of events, Nunez experienced devastation once more after relocating to Xtreme Couture. The untimely suicide of Robert Follis—head coach at the gym—at the end of 2017 left his students and Nunez grappling with profound grief while attempting to make sense of their beloved mentor’s absence.
Navigating such emotional turmoil proved immensely challenging for Nunez as it intersected with the demanding training regimen expected of professional athletes. Nonetheless, Tompkins and Follis’s fond memories and teachings inspired Nunez to pick up his gloves again.

Shortly after their child was born, the couple relocated to Singapore when Tate assumed her position as ONE Vice President. During this time, “Johnny Boy” seized an opportunity to audition for Evolve Fight Team, where his versatile skills earned him coveted membership among their esteemed roster of World Champions. This association further honed his abilities and propelled him towards new heights within the sport.
